The Last Third!

Yesterday started our 28th week - which means that we are now in the third trimester of our pregnancy.

Last week I went to the doctor for a follow-up glucose screening. I failed the preliminary glucose screening at our last appointment (by 4 points, darnnit!). So, I returned for a more intensive screening to determine whether I have gestational diabetes.

The longer test involved giving up an entire morning at work - and putting up with four blood tests: a fasting test and then one, two, and three hours after drinking a beverage with 100 grams of sugar in 10 oz of fluid (I know, it was a weird mix of metric and non-metric units). I was very hungry after the test, but - except for the four holes in my arm - no big problems otherwise.

So, if you 'fail' two or more of the blood tests, you are considered to have gestational diabetes. If you fail only one of the blood tests, you have to meet with the center's nutritionist for 'counseling.' If you pass all of the tests, you get to go on about your merry way. Thankfully, I passed all of the tests - Kyle joked that I studied very hard ... while I did not 'study' very hard, we did spend a fair amount of time and energy worrying about the results so the doctor's call brought us much relief.

Another concern to cross off of our list!

We started painting furniture for the baby's room which is going slowly but well. We're definitely excited to see it all reassembled, but so far the white paint alone is a great improvement.

This coming week will be quite busy. Kyle is traveling for work for about half of the week, and I've got a busy work week too (but I'll be in town all week!).

Our friend Erik helped Kyle move some furniture around our room this afternoon, and I got a few plants into one of our back beds. We've planted a mixture of veggies, herbs, and decorative annuals ... here's hoping they take before Zoe destroys them! Hopefully, we get to tackle the empty front bed before too many more weekends pass.

Now that we're in the third trimester, we're down to appointments every two weeks instead of every four. So, I'll head back to the doc while Kyle is out of town this week.

That's about it for now!

  1. Oh, Heather, I HATED those glucose screening tests!! I'm so glad you passed! They didn't even let me drink water during the fasting test. Oh, and I cried and cried when they told me that I needed to do the fasting test -- I thought that somehow eating that one apple fritter had pushed it over the edge and now all would be lost. But that was not the case --everything was fine. I'm so glad that you guys are well. And I'm super-impressed that you're able to plant with your belly! I had a hard time putting on shoes in the 3rd trimester!! :) Thank you so much for the update!
